Wildfire Relief Support
A huge part of the last year has been the continued response to the fires in Lahaina and Kula. While many organizations are expertly responding by building homes and providing related services, many displaced households are also struggling with food insecurity. Displaced fire survivors have blended into our distribution sites all over Maui. As you can expect, this has led to more costs which have extended well beyond the initial donations. This is why we are eager to celebrate the increased support from Maui churches. First, under the leadership of interim pastor Ron Rucker, Kihei Lutheran Church worked with their national disaster services board to allocate a total of $208,000 for Feed My Sheep. In addition to the two large contributions included in that total, members of Kihei Lutheran have also come together to create hygiene packs for the houseless at Feed My Sheep and other agencies.
Grace Bible Church, the original home of Feed My Sheep, also released funds to assist with these ongoing recovery needs, contributing $20,000 in fire relief funds beyond their regular giving.
Together these two churches have enabled Feed My Sheep to continue adding valuable locally produced food and donated items while covering the increased costs of administering the program to more and more households.
